Freeport, Grand Bahamas
Well family and friends, I am in the Bahamas! It's been pretty crazy and I am excited to serve here.
First off we flew in on Wednesday and both of us are new: we had no food, and a less than clean apartment. So you know how that works. We spend a good amount of time shopping (which was an adventure in itself), cleaning, and getting to know the island. Freeport is "big" for an island in the Bahamas but there is very little going on here. It's very, very, very quiet but it's actually really nice. Finding new people has been a whole new ballgame because there's not many people on the streets. So we are back to door knocking! Now this is not the most fun thing to do, but when you don't know the members, don't know the area, and have very little (to no) people being taught ... you have to do something. I'm here in Freeport with Elder Samuels! He was my last AP, a past zone leader, and a good friend so we are so excited to be serving together! We both have a great, great, great desire to work with the members here in the Freeport branch. The coolest thing I have seen here was that with our desire and our willingness to go out and find people, we have seen so many miracles with members while just walking/biking the streets (yes we are biking).
A few miracles were that we got to visit 2 members who were available in the first few days, we bumped into another member while shopping, and we found a less active member by knocking on the door of a lady that his mom cares for. I want to go through that last one real quick, haha. So we were walking our bikes through this neighborhood, talking to people and knocking doors that we felt to knock. It was actually Elder Samuels first door he has knocked on and Kimberly answered the door. She is working for this old lady named Dorothy and it is Dorothy's house but Kim takes a little bit of time to talk with us and tell us that her son used to come to church. Later we find out he is a member!! We were able to visit them on Sunday and had an amazing lesson with Asheene, Kim's son, and his younger brother JJ as well. It was soooo cool!
Now a little bit more about Freeport, I guess. It has been pretty chilly here and by that I mean overcast and some breeze making it low 70s. I know it's not that cold, but it is, so don't laugh. We also have a great AC in our apartment which we definitely may have been using to make it feel like winter, haha. One crazy thing about Freeport is how expensive everything is here! Now I thought that was because of seeing everything in US dollars at first but no, it is way expensive, haha. It's OK though because we do get a little more money to buy groceries here but it was still surprising!
Freeport is amazing but there is a lot of work that will be getting done here. A lot of prayer and a lot of fasting is what the next few months are going to be but I can't wait to see the blessings God is going to send here. I really can see it happening.
I love you all and hope I answered every question you may have. If not just ask. I can't promise I will get back right away because things have been so busy but I will read it and get back as soon as I am able. Until next week!
